ABOUT THE SHOW

The Hello Girls tells the true story of America’s first women soldiers — the bilingual telephone operators who served on the front lines in World War I. Fast-paced, actor-driven, and rich with harmony, the show celebrates courage, service, and sisterhood. You can find the cast recording on Spotify and YouTube.

CHARACTER BREAKDOWN

6–8 Women / 6 Men

GRACE BANKER — 25-30, Soprano/Mix. Poised and articulate, hesitant to rock the boat, but with a core of steely strength that emerges as she grows into her role as leader. From Passaic, New Jersey. Graduated from Barnard in 1915 and worked at AT&T as a telephone operator and supervisor before joining the Army. Required to do at least 5 push-ups in the show. French language skills a plus.

SUZANNE PREVÔT — 24-30, Mezzo/Folk Belt. From New York City. Feisty, sardonic, tough-talking. A close friend of Grace’s from AT&T who holds her accountable to her ideals and advocates for change. French language skills a plus.

LOUISE LE BRETON — 18-21, Soprano. Born in France; immigrated to San Francisco as a teen. Fearless, flirty, headstrong, and often insubordinate. Lies about her age to join the Army. French accent and French language fluency/high proficiency a plus.

HELEN HILL — Early 20s, Mezzo. From outside Boise, Idaho. A small-town farm girl from a family of 17 children, with a mother who speaks French. Sweet, over-enthusiastic, wholesomely kooky, and prone to nervous panic. French language skills a plus.

BERTHA HUNT — 30s, Alto. From San Francisco. Married to a Navy doctor who is also serving abroad. Older, wiser, reliable — the den mother. Extremely knowledgeable about military matters. French language skills a plus.

CAPTAIN JOSEPH W. RISER — 20s-30s, Baritone. The Signal Corps commanding officer who recruits and trains the women and journeys with them to the front. A career Army man, a stickler for rules and order. Skeptical of the women’s presence in the Army, even as his own success relies on theirs. Develops a

close working relationship with Grace.

GENERAL JOHN PERSHING — 50s, Baritone. Commander of the American Expeditionary Forces. Hard, relentless, inflexible, with a deep sense of honor and American identity — but cares deeply about the troops under his command.

PRIVATE EUGENE MATTERSON — 20s-30s. An enlisted man in the Signal Corps who works closely with Captain Riser. Quick-witted and charmingly mischievous. Develops an interest in Suzanne.

ENSEMBLE: 2–3 Women and 3 Men — 20s–30s, all voice types. Dancers strongly encouraged! Will play a variety of named and unnamed characters. Strong character actors. For men, a German accent is a plus.

All roles require strong ensemble work, musicality, and storytelling. All ethnicities, body types, and gender identities encouraged to audition.
